Abstract

New manufacturing processes like sheet-bulk metal forming offer a high degree of freedom to the design engineer, because complex features elements (teeth, grooves, etc.) can be manufactured, that were not realizable before or only at high costs.
In order to make use of this new design freedom the design engineer can be assisted by knowledge based systems, whereas the knowledge acquisition is the most crucial step in the development of a KBE-system. This paper presents a Gaussian process based approach for automatic acquisition of design-relevant and manufacturing related knowledge.
