Abstract

Do you know Steve Erwin? Probably not! But you might know some of the tricky situations he has to deal with in the context of university teaching. One time he gets himself in trouble with the quality management of the faculty due to incorrect formulation of learning-outcomes, another time he must face bad assessment results of his students, because of misaligned teaching activities. Steve is an ambitious post-graduate, on fire for his research project, but lacking teaching experience. He is the anti-hero and leading character of an online-training course for university teachers based on digital storytelling with comic-style videos. At the end of each videosequence describing one of his teaching-adventures, Steve hands over his problems now to be solved by the learners of the course. In a small design-based research project at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) this version of an anchored-based-instruction was developed and evaluated with a special focus on digital storytelling. First results are discussed in this paper, including how the learners appraised these videos with regard to their learning and how these videos should be designed and integrated to create a positive learning environment.
