Abstract

Drawing from the fact that translation resignifies the source text when transferring it to another cultural context, and assuming that within any translated narrative the voice of the translator creates a more complex communicative situation, this essay explores the changes that occur when, in the early 1940s in Argentina, Julio Cortázar, translates the novel L’Immoraliste by André Gide, which was written in France at the beginning of the 20th century. After presenting the situation of the literary field in which Gide writes his novel about homosexual desire, and outlining some aspects related to the reception in France, the focus will be on the tension between the sociopolitical homophobic context in the 1940s in Argentina and the editorial policies, which at that time promoted the translation of acclaimed homosexual writers. This is the case in the translation by Cortázar, which was published by Argos. Finally, through a textual comparison of a crucial scene in the novel with its translation, a set of divergences are identified that can be read as symptoms of refraction in the process of translation from a gender perspective.
