Abstract

A TiO2nanoparticle coating was prepared on a biomedical Ti–6Al–4V alloy using “spin-coating” tech-nique with a colloidal suspension of TiO2nanopowders with the aim to optimize the surface morphology(e.g., roughness) for improved biocompatibility. The influence of a TiO2nanoparticle (NP) coating onthe corrosion behavior, metal ion release, and biomimetic apatite formation was studied in DMEM, at37.5◦C with a continuous supply of 5% CO2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurementsindicate a formation of a new layer on the surface of the NP-coated sample upon 28 days immersionin DMEM. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray spectroscopy confirm that the surface of theNP-coated Ti–6Al–4V shows a complete coverage by a Ca–phosphate layer in contrast to the non-coatedTi–6Al–4V alloy. Hence, the TiO2-NP coating strongly enhances biomimetic apatite formation on the alloysurface. In addition, the TiO2-NP coating can efficiently reduce Al-release from the alloy, for which thebare Ti–6Al–4V alloy is significant for at least 28 days of immersion in DMEM.
