Project details

Short description

The project „Pupils’ Diversity and Success in Science Education in Germany and Malaysia“ seeks to demonstrate the potential of higher education institutions to promote cultural dialogue with the Islamic world based on the idea of scientific reflection and the deconstruction of stereotypes. This project promotes the subject specific cooperation in the area of Educational Sciences between Germany and Malaysia, thus extending the dialogue with the Islamic world to a geographic region and disciplinary area that have been less intensively tackled so far.

Both countries face the problem of modernising education in order to cope with the rapid technological and societal development while trying to secure the participation of different groups in a multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multilingual society. This project makes use of research results about how Germany and Malaysia deal with the issue of diversity in education. A particular focus will be on gender, religion and ability.

The project aims at the development of culturally sensitive curricular elements for programmes of tertiary level of education, at the identification and support of young academics in the field of Science Education and at the establishment of institutional and personal networks as a framework for a sustainable cultural and scientific dialogue.

The project is conducted by the research and teaching unit “Diversity Education and International Educational Research” at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg in cooperation with the School of Educational Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The project promotes a sustainable cultural and scientific dialogue between Europe and East Asia and involves young academics and students in the field of Science Education. The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the programme ‘Higher Education Dialogue with the Muslim World’.
