Literature and Culture of the 'Long' Eighteenth Century

Description / Outline

The intense discourse of early Enlightenment philosophy classifies the long 18th century as one of the most exciting periods in English literary history. In order to understand the substantial literature (novels, satires, essays, oriental tales, pamphlets, poems, theoretical texts) and the culture of this era this research project analyses the socio-historical background of the time and its complex interrelations with the philosophy, aesthetic theory, natural science, theology and art typical of the Augustan age and the second half of the century.
