Mathematical Physics

Description / Outline

Mathematical physics is concerned with the rigorous foundations of mathematics that underlies our physical theories. In particular for theories, whose experimental verification is currently out of reach due to technical limitations, mathematical physics plays an outstanding role, since mathematical consistency is the only remaining quality criterion. This is especially important in the case of quantum gravity. Results from different mathematical disciplines such as differential geometry, algebra and functional analysis are applied. Furthermore, the construction of a theory of quantum gravity will require the development of new mathematical methods.
