Abstract

Climate change is one of the most important challenges of our time. While at first sight the danger seems to emanate from extreme weather situations and natural disasters, the risk of a possible increase or change in the pathogen spectrum of infectious diseases should not be ignored. We do not yet know much about the spread of infectious diseases due to global warming. Most scenarios are derived from statistical climate models and what the future will look like is difficult to estimate. In addition, the lack of epidemiological data and different mandatory reporting of infectious diseases make the risk assessment more difficult. Furthermore, the spread of infectious diseases is not only dependent on higher temperatures. Changes in the use of agricultural land, socioeconomic factors with population growth and migration, access to clean drinking water, and innovations in the healthcare and reporting systems will continue to change the pattern of infectious diseases. Infectious diseases will affect the nephrology community in different ways in the coming years and decades. Some, such as hantavirus infections, are obvious as acute kidney injury is characteristic for this disease. Others have an indirect effect, through septic or prerenal kidney injury or because most of the patients belong to vulnerable groups and are particularly in need of protection. In the case of febrile illnesses, many of the diseases mentioned should be considered as differential diagnoses in the future, even without a suitable travel history.
